"That’s the spirit! is a silkscreen printing piece depicting buildings from the Dead Cities in Syria, and olive bombs representing RGD-5 hand grenades. The olives are representative of the Dead Cities being a centre for olive trade during the time they were occupied, which are now under threat of being destroyed during the Syrian Civil war.
The work speaks on the impact of human intervention on the environment, connecting past and present. The past in which these structures were built and the present, 1500 years later, where they are threatened to be destroyed.
The work is satirical, and draws on inspiration from Pop-art and pop-culture. Using the Martini Olive not only as a pop culture reference, but also a direct reference to the affected areas in Syria (the Aleppo region), and as a relational connection point between the affected and the observative. The work relates to my previous explorations of the effect of war on the environment in an observational and record-keeping manner."
