pynappel

Combining a pinecone with the form of a fragmentation grenade, Pynappel explores the impact of war on nature. The work contrasts natural forms with mechanical violence, and reflects on the masculine histories of both conflict and sculptural practice.

"Pynappel is a bronze sculpture depicting a pineapple-style fragmentation grenade, with a pinecone forming its base to mimic the grenade’s signature texture. This substitution of a natural object for a violent artifact draws attention to the environmental destruction caused by war, blurring the lines between the organic and the mechanical.
The sculpture’s making - carving, melting, filing, drilling - invokes traditionally masculine processes, echoing the gendered history of both war and sculpture. Its dark patina mimics military aesthetics, while the grenade’s implied fragmentation speaks to broader acts of violence - toward nature, toward bodies, and through history."

"The Hound is a small sculptural side project modeled after my own dog. Depicted lying on her back with her head twisted behind and only two legs visible, the figure captures a moment of playful vulnerability and abstracted form.
By distorting anatomy and emphasizing posture, the work becomes a gentle study in affection, character, and the strange ways we see those we love. It balances humor and tenderness, turning a familiar subject into something both personal and sculpturally expressive."
