"Flowers? For control? Groundbreaking. explores my persistent need for control - how it shapes my identity and how I attempt to make it digestible to others. The work draws from traditional Chinese and Japanese ink painting, especially their emphasis on landscapes, which led me to use flowers and plants as symbols of femininity and palatability.
The piece unfolds across three panels: the first offers a composed, aesthetically pleasing scene; the second shifts into disorientation, where ink gives way to more tactile materials; the third is a quiet reprieve - a to-do list.
Using ink, a medium known for its fluid unpredictability, to convey control is intentionally ironic. Like ink artists mastering their brushstrokes, I aim to exert precision. The inclusion of altered teabags - cut, refilled, emptied, sealed - extends this idea, emphasizing control over even the smallest elements. Meanwhile, the rotting flowers signal the fragility and unsustainability of this impulse."
