"Dog with a bone is a carved wood sculpture of a bone-shaped boat, a Hadley’s quadrant
sail, and an amalgamation of four different gulfs, harbours and bights where armed
conflicts took place, with a greyhound in the act of hunting as the figurehead.
By implementing harsh marks, creating jagged holes, and using the symbolism of the
greyhound, a hunting dog, leading the ship into battle, a macabre atmosphere is
established.

The disparity in size between the dog and bone conjures up the image of biting off more
than you can chew. The coastlines acting as reminders of the conflicts experienced
there, are arranged in order of date they occurred, starting with the Battle of the
Heligoland Bight at the precipice, flowing into the Pearl Harbour attack, down into the
Gulf of Tonkin and the Leyte Gulf.

Drawing inspiration from Gerhard Marx’s manipulation of map lines to create new
imagery, I aimed to create a story highlighting a country’s obsessive nature that
develops when at war with one another, the tenacious waiting and planning of attacks. I
sought to place focus mainly however, on the fanatical involvement of America, and how
they have and do insert themselves into conflicts completely unrelated to themselves.
Additionally, their unwillingness to “let go”, their refusal to concede; the dog with its
bone."
